2026/2027 student grants in Italy
2026/2027 student grants in Italy will benefit from additional state funding. The Council of Ministers has approved €288 million in extra resources for university students, bringing total state funding for the 2026/2027 academic year to more than €845.8 million.
The decision was announced by Anna Maria Bernini, Italy’s Minister of University and Research. According to the minister, the new allocation adds to more than €557.8 million already made available through state funds. Overall funding is therefore 19.5% higher than in the previous academic year.
2026/2027 student grants in Italy: funding
For the 2026/2027 academic year, state funding for student grants reaches more than €845.8 million. The amount is also substantially higher than the €307.8 million allocated in 2020. According to the MUR, the additional resources are intended to help maintain the high coverage levels reached in recent years. Coverage of eligible students reached 99.8% in the 2024/2025 academic year, when 299,618 grants were awarded. That figure has increased steadily, from 244,171 grants in 2020/2021 to around 300,000 in recent years.
Grant amounts for 2026/2027
Funding is not the only element that has changed. The MUR has also increased the value of university grants and updated the ISEE thresholds used to determine eligibility. The amount depends on whether a student is classified as living away from home, commuting or living at home. For students living away from home, the annual grant will reach €7,171.11. Commuting students can receive €4,190.71, while students living at home can receive €2,890.16. Compared with the 2022/2023 academic year, the increase amounts to €1,013.37 per year for students living away from home, more than €592 for commuters and €408.41 for students living at home. As a result, 2026/2027 student grants in Italy combine higher overall funding with increased individual grant amounts.
What the increase means for students
The MUR says the additional funding is intended to consolidate the high levels of coverage achieved in recent years. At the same time, higher grant amounts and updated economic thresholds affect the support available to eligible students. For prospective applicants, it will be important to check the relevant regional call for applications and the information provided by the competent body for the right to study. Procedures, deadlines and application requirements may vary depending on the region and university.
