Habacus, credit broker: a new player in Italy’s student loan market
Habacus Srl, the Italian pioneer in certifying students’ academic performance, has officially been recognized as a credit broker by the Organismo Agenti e Mediatori (OAM). This milestone strengthens Habacus’s role as a facilitator of student access to credit and further consolidates its position in a fast-growing market full of untapped potential.
A milestone for students and families
“The registration with OAM is an important achievement because it allows us to provide students and families with greater assurances of transparency and reliability. We believe that student loans are a crucial tool to make education accessible and to support young talent” said Paolo Cuniberti, founder of Habacus.

A rapidly expanding market
At present, about 13,000 student loans are certified each year in Italy. However, the potential market is estimated to range between 300,000 and 400,000 beneficiaries.
How many university students are there in Italy?
Against this backdrop, the potential demand is significant: in 2025 Italy counts roughly 1.9 million university students overall [Source: USTAT, giugno 2025], including 341,000 new enrollments for the 2024–2025 academic year—an increase of 5.3% compared to the previous year [Fonte: Censis/Anagrafe Nazionale Studenti Universitari, luglio 2025]. These figures highlight the existence of a growing pool of potential beneficiaries that remains largely untapped by the credit market.

In the 2024–2025 academic year alone, more than €370 million were disbursed in personal loans dedicated to school, university, and training, with demand rising by 15% compared to the previous year.
The average loan amount reached €6,916, up 3% year-on-year, with the majority of requests coming from young people under the age of 30. [Source: CRIF report]
CRIF data point to further growth in 2025: an 8% increase in average loan amounts and an 11.4% rise in personal loans, which now average €12,201.
New Opportunities Through the “Fondo per lo Studio”
A strong signal of the market’s maturity comes from the Fondo per lo Studio managed by CONSAP, which guarantees up to 70% of the loan value. A new decree, currently pending approval, is expected to raise maximum loan amounts and simplify procedures for students both in Italy and abroad.
