Fondo per lo Studio: current rules and new updates
The new decree on the Fondo per lo Studio, published on January 24, 2026, introduces changes that expand access to credit opportunities for Italian students.
Let’s clarify what the Fondo per lo Studio currently provides.
The Fondo per lo Studio today
At the date of submission of the loan application, students aged between 18 and 40 may apply for the loan, provided they are up to date with their university tuition fees, are not beyond the standard duration of their course, and are enrolled at public universities, private universities, online universities, or AFAM institutions (Academies and Conservatories) in one of the following programs:
- Single-cycle Bachelor’s or 5 years Master’s degree (minimum grade requirement: 75/100 in high school diploma)
- Master’s degree (minimum grade requirement: 100/110 in Bachelor’s degree)
- First- or Second-level University Master’s program (minimum grade requirement: 100/110 in degree)
- Specialization school (minimum grade requirement:100/110 in single-cycle Master’s degree)
- PhD program (minimum grade requirement: 100/110 in degree)
- ITS (minimum grade requirement: 75/100 in high school diploma)
Alternatively, access is also granted to those attending a language course of at least 6 months, recognized by an accredited certification institution.
Amounts:
The amounts that can be requested through the fondo per lo studio may reach a maximum total of €50,000 for students enrolled in study programs in Italy and €70,000 for students enrolled in study programs abroad.
The loan is disbursed in annual installments ranging from a minimum of €3,000 to a maximum of €15,000, depending on the number of academic years remaining at the time of application.

Repayment: how the pre-amortization phase works
The loan repayment schedule may under no circumstances begin before 30 months have passed since the disbursement of the final installment. This guarantee is designed to allow the student to enter the workforce or ease the pressure of repayment before starting the loan amortization plan.
Repayment: once the pre-amortization period has ended, it will be possible to agree directly with the bank on the total repayment duration, ranging from 3 to 15 years, and consequently on the amount of the installments, so as to tailor the plan according to one’s personal and professional needs.
The new decree on the Fondo per lo Studio marks a turning point: more students will have access to credit, with higher amounts and repayment conditions designed not to weigh immediately on their educational and professional path.
